Ko Chang Tourism Information

ℹ️ Introduction

Koh Chang, ('Elephant Island' in Thai) is part of the Mu Ko Chang National Park, and is the largest and most popular of the islands in eastern Thailand.

Koh Chang is Thailand's third largest island but is nowhere near as developed or bustling as the two largest - Phuket and Samui. It is far less touristy and far less well-known.

This means Koh Chang is definitely worth visiting if you want to avoid the crowds. There are some great beaches, a good range of accommodation and a wide choice of restaurants and bars.

🚇 Transport

Before you email to ask, there are no trains due to the lack of railway tracks in this part of Thailand. The bus timetables below probably won’t vary too much over the 2022-23 High Season.  Inter-island boat schedules are at the bottom of the page and these too remain pretty similar year on year.

Having said that covid restrictions have been playing havoc with people’s travel plans since early 2020 and, as of early 2022 that’s still the case. Don’t expect all bus or boat services to be running until normality resumes.

Buy tickets for minibuses and inter island boat services from any tour agent.   Prices should be the same everywhere, although some hotels like to up the prices they charge guests for tickets for tours and transport, and it’s worth haggling if you have a group of people as a sensible agent should be willing to earn a little less commission rather than miss out on a big sale.

Buses from Bangkok to Koh Chang

Ideally take the Government Bus 999 which runs between Ekamai Bus Station, Sukhumvit Rd, Bangkok and the ferry piers, highlighted in green below. The ticket price is 261 Baht per person.

These buses are all new and in good condition.  They provide a free snack and drink on the bus and it will also stop a couple of times during the journey.  Once for a toilet break and once for a longer 20 minutes break that will enable passengers to grab a coffee, snack or plate of Thai food.

As this is the best way to get to Koh Chang by public transport I have written a separate guide on How to Take the 999 Bus from Ekkamai Bus Station to Koh Chang.

Overnight Buses from Bangkok to Koh Chang

No there is no night bus to Laem Ngop, where the piers are located. But there is a Cherdchai bus from Ekkamai have a service which leaves at 23:30. It arrives at Trat bus station at 05:00 and from there you get a songthaew to the piers. There’s only 30 minutes of waiting time before you can get on the first boat, so it works well.

For people trying to save a night’s accommodation it’s still better to travel by night in terms of overall cost. And the traffic isn’t so bad. Daytime buses to the piers from Bangkok or vice versa take 6+ hours, nearly 7 if they go via the airport. Nighttime is less than 6 hours either way, sometimes close to 5 hours.

Note that at Ekkamai they will try and sell you the through ticket to Koh Chang (including the boat ticket). There’s no reason to buy the boat ticket until you get to Trat, because there’s no discount, but it’s up to you.

Going back to Bangkok there is a 23:30  bus from Cherdchai too, from Trat bus station. So you can do the same thing in reverse.  However, you’ll have quite a long wait after taking the last boat off Koh Chang from Centrepoint pier at at 19:30 to getting top Trat bus station.  And there’s not a lot to do in Trat bus station late night. Or in Trat town for that matter.

There isn’t an airport on Koh Chang.  But there is one on the mainland in Trat.

Bangkok Airways owns Trat Airport and so has a monopoly on the daily flights to/from Bangkok.   Prier to covid there were up to eight flights per day, four in each direction.  The prices for the 40 minute sky hop aren’t that cheap, you can get a return ticket for Bangkok to Hanoi cheaper than a one way Bangkok to Trat flight.  But it is a stress free, convenient way to get here.

Prices from 1,500 – 4,000 Baht/person one way depending on time of year and how desperate for bookings the airline is.  Keep an eye out for 1,000 Baht one way flights during Low Season, there are sometimes good deals to be had.  Book online at the Bangkok Airways website.   Flights are rarely full outside the main peak season.

Once you arrive at Laem Ngop there is a choice of piers from where you can catch a ferry to Koh Chang. Cenferry at Centrepoint Pier (Tha Centre Point) which is 3km along the coast from Laem Ngob and Ao Thammachat which is roughly 9km from Laem Ngob and about 17km from Trat airport. If you wish to take your own car over to Koh Chang it is best to use the Ao Thammachat car ferry. Both ferries will arrive on the eastern part of Chang island so you will need to catch a Songthaew to the popular west coast of the island from there.

Here below are the Koh Chang ferry timetables and further Information.

Centrepoint Pier Cenferry to Koh Chang Daily: 6.45 am until 18.45 pm ( Ferries Depart every hour )

One way is 100 baht ( person ) A return ticket is 140 baht ( person ) and 180 baht ( car ). The Ferry to Koh Chang journey time is approximately 30-45 minutes.

How to get from Trat Airport to Koh Chang, Koh Mak and Koh Kood.

Songtaew (Pickup truck taxi)

The cheapest method is to take a pick up truck taxi from the airport to the ferry pier.  There will be a couple of songtaews waiting for passengers parked outside the airport terminal building.  They will charge 280 Baht per person to Ao Thammachat pier, this includes the ferry ticket to Koh Chang.  These take up to 12 passengers.

Take the ferry and once on Koh Chang hop on another shared songtaew to your hotel.  These are parked on the main road by the ferry pier.  The cost is from 50 to 200 Baht per person depending on distance to your hotel. 50 Baht to White Sand Beach and 200 baht to Bang Bao Beach, in the far south of the island.

So, using this method, the total cost per person is from 330 – 480 Baht to get from the airport to your hotel.

Shared Minibus To Koh Chang:

This is a more comfortable option compared to the shared pick up truck taxi.  You’ll have a proper seat and be an airconditioned vehicle.  Plus don’t have to worry about taking luggage on and off taxis and the ferry.

Tickets for the shared minibus can be bought on arrival at Trat Airport.  Or for visitors who only require the service from Koh Chang to Trat Airport, they can be bought at tour agents on Koh Chang.

For anyone heading straight to Koh Chang, Trat airport is conveniently located approximately 20 minutes drive from Ao Thammachat ferry pier.  Transport between the airport and resorts on the west coast of Koh Chang by ‘Krungthep Limousine’ which operate the services specifically for Bangkok Airways passengers.

The minibuses run in accordance with the flight schedule.  The service drops off and picks up passengers from all resorts on the west coast of the island.  But unfortunately, it doesn’t run down the east coast of Koh Chang. The last drop of location on the east coast is Serenity Resort.

The total travelling time from Trat Airport to your hotel on Koh Chang will be around 2 to 2 and a half hours.  From the airport to the ferry pier is just a 20 minute drive. Ferries run every 45 minutes from 06:30 until 18:30.

The ferry crossing takes around 30 minutes.  During this time you’ll be able to sit upstairs and enjoy the view as you head towards the island. There is also a kiosk selling drinks and snacks on board the boat. Once on Koh Chang, the driving time to your hotel is anywhere from 15 minutes (for visitors staying on White Sand beach) to an hour (for hotels in Bangbao or on Klong Kloi beach.)

If you are buying a return ticket, you will be given a voucher to hand the driver when he picks you up for the journey back to Trat Airport.  This will also have a phone number of the minibus company, in case you decide to change hotels or flights.

For flights departing from Trat, the minibus will pick passengers up around 3 and a half to 4 hours before the flight departure time.

There is a discount for booking the return trip in advance.

🏖️  Beaches

Ko Chang is a paradise for beach seekers, that should be your main reason to coming here and enjoy some quiet and peaceful times. All the beaches are all on the west coast, with White Sand beach in the north and Lonely beach in the south.  In between, you have Klong Prao - the longest beach on the island and Kai Bae beach.

Note, that each beach has a different atmosphere. So there isn't necessarily a best beach on Ko Chang. There are other, quieter, beach areas on the island and you'll be able to travel to them if taking private hires around the island or tours. Next you will find the main most popular beaches:

  • White Sand Beach: The closest to the ferry piers and by far the busiest & most touristy beach on the island. Everything you need is within easy walking distance of your resort. Accommodation is mostly 2-3 star resorts on the beach. There's a wide choice of restaurants, plus beer bars, the ubiquitous Irish pub and numerous others.
  • Klong Prao Beach: The longest beach on Koh Chang and cut in three by a large river estuary in the centre of the beach and a much smaller one near the south.  Here you'll find accommodation mostly in larger resorts.  The south end of the beach is home to some of the best resorts on the island Emerald Cove Resort, Centrara Tropicana and The Dewa.
There are relatively few resorts for the length of beach and so it's easy to walk a few minutes and find a quiet spot to swim even in peak season.  Near the north end, you'll find plenty of small shops and restaurants clustered on the roadside.
  • Kai Bae Beach: This one also has two halves.  The south having by far the best stretch of sand.  But the northern half having three of the islands best resorts adjacent to each other - The Chill, Gajapuri Resort and AWA Resort. All are excellent places to stay but the actual beach is not as good.
  • Lonely Beach: The original backpacker beach on Koh Chang.  Although it is now moving more upmarket.  There are only three places to stay actually on the beach itself.
Most accommodation is a few minutes walk south in a busy built up area.  This is also home to a lot of cheap guesthouses and huts.
