Cairns experiences a tropical climate with warm temperatures throughout the year. Summer extends from December to February and is characterised by hot, humid weather with daytime temperatures generally ranging between 30°C and 35°C, while nights remain warm at around 24°C to 26°C. This is also the wet season, bringing frequent afternoon thunderstorms, high humidity and occasional tropical cyclones.
Winter, from June to August, is considered the most comfortable and popular time to visit. Daytime temperatures typically range between 22°C and 28°C, with pleasant evenings cooling to around 17°C to 21°C. Humidity is much lower than in summer, rainfall is minimal, and most days are sunny with clear blue skies, creating ideal conditions for sightseeing, reef cruises, hiking and exploring the surrounding rainforests.
Lightweight, breathable clothing is recommended throughout the year, along with comfortable walking shoes, sunglasses, a hat and high-factor sunscreen, as ultraviolet radiation can be very strong even during winter. Visitors travelling during the wet season should also pack a lightweight waterproof jacket or umbrella for occasional heavy showers.
Winters (June to September) are the best season to visit Cairns with good clear skies, mild warm temperatures and less jellyfish in the waters. Regardless of the season, staying well hydrated is important due to the tropical climate, while those planning reef trips or outdoor adventures should always check local weather forecasts, as sea conditions and tour schedules may occasionally be affected by changing weather and these may be cancelled due to strong winds and tides.
Cairns is well connected by air and road, making it an easy gateway to Tropical North Queensland. Most visitors arrive at Cairns Airport, located about 7 km north of the city centre. Normally, Australian locals will rent a car from the airport or hire a taxi or Uber to their accommodations. Public transport from the airport is limited, at present (2026) there is only an airport shuttle which connects Cairns Airport to Port Douglas. But there is no public services from the airport to the city. So you will need to pay a taxi or Uber to your accommodation which will cost about AUD$25-40.
There is a long-distance train, including the famous Spirit of Queensland, that connects Cairns with Brisbane takes 25 hours and operates 4 times a week in each direction.
Long-distance coaches link the city with destinations across Queensland, but their services are often very long in time. For more info on coaches refer to Greyhound Australia.
Within Cairns, public transport is provided mainly by an extensive bus network that connects the CBD with the suburbs, beaches and other major attractions.
Adult fares are very cheap. Only AUD$0.50 for a single ticket. AUD$1 for a day pass or AUD$5 for a weekly pass. You can pay by contactless or card (Visa and Mastercard) on board.
Cairns has no suburban train or tram system, but its compact city centre makes walking easy, while cycling and e-scooters are also popular for short distances.

The night market is open every day till late and is the ideal place for dinner or buying snacks and souvenirs! Cairns Aquarium: Located at just a short walk from the Esplanade, the Aquarium is one of the city's most popular family-friendly attractions. Opened in 2017, it is the only aquarium in the world dedicated exclusively to the unique marine and freshwater habitats of Tropical North Queensland. It provides an excellent opportunity to discover the remarkable wildlife of the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics Rainforest.
The aquarium is representing a wide range of local ecosystems, from rainforest rivers and mangrove forests to coral reefs and the deep ocean. Highlights include Australia's largest freshwater display, a spectacular 10-metre-deep reef tank, a 20-metre underwater tunnel, shark and ray exhibits, colourful tropical fish, crocodiles, turtles and daily educational talks and feeding presentations. Visitors can also enjoy special experiences such as the evening "Aquarium by Twilight and Night" tour or guided visits.
General admission is AUD $61 for adults, but you can get cheaper tickets if you book via an online agent. The Twilight tour and night tours cost AUD$89.

Scenic reef flight (3km) -
Port Douglas (67 km) – Accessible by public bus or shuttle services. The coastal drive offers stunning ocean views, while the town features Four Mile Beach, boutique shops, cafés, and easy access to the Great Barrier Reef and Mossman Gorge.
Daintree Rainforest & Cape Tribulation (140 km) – Travel by public bus to Mossman, then connect with local tour operators or shuttle services. Home to the world's oldest tropical rainforest, the area offers ancient forests, crocodile cruises, boardwalks, and the rare meeting point of rainforest and reef.
Babinda & Josephine Falls (60–75 km) – Reachable by Queensland Rail to Babinda, followed by a short taxi or local transfer. Highlights include lush rainforest, the historic Babinda township, and the crystal-clear swimming holes and cascades of Josephine Falls.

As well, there is a lot of international cuisine, including Thai, Chinese, Vietnamese and Japanese! The city also has Event Cinemas, an aquarium night experience, and occasional cultural performances. 🚕 Most attractions are within walking distance, while taxis, rideshares, and limited evening buses make getting around easy. 🚶♂️

Cairns CBD and the Esplanade are the best areas for most visitors. Staying around there there is easy walking distance of the Reef Fleet Terminal, Cairns Lagoon, restaurants, bars, shopping, and the departure points for Great Barrier Reef and rainforest tours. However, this area is also the most expensive. Cairns North is another good option, offering quieter surroundings while remaining just a short walk or drive from the city centre. Average hotel prices in 2025 range from AU$120–220 per night for a comfortable 3- to 4-star hotel, with budget options starting from around AU$70–100 depending on the season. (Winter or the dry season, June to October is the high season with prices being often more expensive).

Budget travelers will find hostels including YHA Cairns Central, Travellers Oasis, and Global Backpackers Cairns. There are also many motel style places which offer private rooms but shared bathroom.

A stay of 4–5 days is ideal for experiencing Cairns and its surrounding attractions without feeling rushed. This allows time for a full-day Great Barrier Reef cruise, a trip to the Kuranda rainforest, exploring the city and Esplanade, and visiting nearby beaches, waterfalls, or the Daintree Rainforest.
