5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐: A perfectly safe destination for any traveller, solo or in groups. The levels of crime and risk of scams are practically none and the destination is perfectly developed in all ways to offer travellers a level of comfort, security and services for peace of mind. The country/region can be travelled to without restrictions/constraints and travellers face very few special risks.
Violent crime against travellers/foreigners is rare and there are no particular risks from natural hazards or in terms of health. Security forces and rescue services are readily and reliably available. In the areas of transport and infrastructure, high standards are maintained. Terrorist organizations can operate in the country, but to a limited extent at most, thus the level of threat from terrorism is not covered in these countries/regions. Violent protests are relatively uncommon and/or very localized. Strikes in essential services (e.g. security/emergency services) very rarely occur, if at all. Severe weather can occur, though is rarely destructive on a significant scale.
4⭐⭐⭐⭐: Exercise normal precautions when travelling. The destination is widely popular with tourists and visitors, so this can make the risk of scams and pick-pocketing more likely. However, developed infrastructure is in place, overall security is good and transport is safe. Risks potentially affecting travel and requiring special measures/precautions might arise in the areas of strike, health, natural hazards, crime and/or demonstrations. Attention should therefore be paid to those country-specific categories. Travel might, for example, be restricted due to tropical diseases, strikes, natural disasters (e.g. storms, seasonal weather phenomena), violent crime or an increase in protest activity. Travellers are advised to consult the country-database (providing situation reports & instructions) so as to inform themselves about possible risks at their travel destination.
3⭐⭐⭐: Travel with caution. The destination may be slightly undeveloped, or lacking some police presence. The risk of natural disasters or unpredictable weather may create additional challenges when travelling in this type of destination. Contracting tours or agents when travelling to more remote areas is advised. The risk of tourists being targeted for petty crime, pick-pocketing and scams are possible. Infrastructure is not as developed, making it less safe to travel by road. Contracting travel insurance is highly recommended. It’s advised to check latest news before travelling. Travellers should exercise increased vigilance and to consult the country-database (providing situation reports & instructions) prior to departure.
2⭐⭐: High alert Travel Precautions must be put in place before travelling to this destination. The possibility of solo travelling is very remote or highly dangerous, due to tourists being targeted by crime. The destination can only be travelled in an organised group and there are many regulations in place in order to travel. The destination might have suffered a natural disaster recently and the infrastructure and services are severely damaged or compromised. Due to political reasons there are on-going conflicts or attacks on its territories using weapons.
1⭐ Do NOT travel to this destination currently. This is the highest advisory level due to life-threatening risks. Due to important conflicts, such as wars and terrorist attacks. Travelling to this destination is highly dangerous. Visitors are highly targeted by crime groups for ransom exchanges which involves kidnapping. Infrastructure levels are practically non-existent and the possibility of mal-nourishment and poor water supply can create severe illnesses or even death. We advise to check latest news to monitor the situation of the destination and wait till the levels improve. Weather conditions are extremely unstable and there is ongoing natural disasters such as volcanoes, earthquakes, hurricanes, typhoons, fires or floods which make it extremely dangerous to visit at present.
