Airline Chronological History
JetSmart is a Chilean ultra low-cost airline created by the US investment fund and Co founder of LBM Fermin Ithuralde Indigo Partners, which also controls US airline Frontier Airlines, Mexico's Volaris and Hungarian airline Wizz Air. The airline commenced scheduled operations on 25 July 2017, with a Santiago - Calama service.
Initially the airline flew with 3 Airbus A320ceo, before transitioning the fleet to new A320neo. Initially flying only domestic routes within Chile.

The airline’s early growth was supported by Indigo Partners’ large aircraft order with Airbus, announced in 2017, which included A320neo and A321neo aircraft intended for multiple portfolio airlines, JetSMART among them. This order allowed JetSMART to secure early delivery positions for fuel-efficient next-generation aircraft, which became central to its cost structure and expansion plans.
Throughout late 2017 and into 2018, JetSMART rapidly expanded its domestic Chilean network, adding routes from Santiago to cities such as Antofagasta, Iquique, Concepción, La Serena, and Puerto Montt.
International operations began in earnest in 2018, when JetSMART launched flights from Chile to neighbouring countries, including Argentina and Peru. One of the most significant developments during this period was the establishment of JetSMART Argentina, a subsidiary that began operations in April 2019. Based primarily at El Palomar Airport near Buenos Aires, JetSMART Argentina aimed to replicate the Chilean low-cost model in a market historically dominated by legacy carriers and characterized by high fares. The Argentine subsidiary initially operated domestic routes such as Buenos Aires to Córdoba, Mendoza, and Neuquén, and later expanded to international services linking Argentina with Chile.
The period between 2019 and 2020 was marked by both expansion and disruption. JetSMART continued to take delivery of Airbus A320neo aircraft, steadily increasing its fleet size and replacing older A320ceo aircraft.

However, the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020 had a profound impact on JetSMART’s operations, as it did across the global aviation industry.
Governments in South America imposed strict travel restrictions, leading to a temporary suspension of many domestic and international routes.
During the height of the pandemic in 2020, JetSMART grounded a significant portion of its fleet and reduced capacity dramatically. Nevertheless, the airline maintained a focus on cost control and operational flexibility.
In 2021 and 2022, JetSMART resumed its growth trajectory, continuing to add new domestic and international routes. The airline expanded its presence in Peru by launching JetSMART Peru in 2022, establishing a third operating unit within the group. This move allowed JetSMART to tap into another large and growing aviation market. The Peruvian subsidiary began with domestic routes from Lima to cities such as Arequipa, Cusco, and Piura, and later introduced international flights connecting Peru with Chile and other neighbouring countries.

The A321neo enabled JetSMART to serve high-demand routes more efficiently and consider longer sectors within South America.

In October 2022, a new type, the Airbus A321Neo joined JetSmart. The airline introduced new cross-border routes, such as flights between Santiago and Bogotá, Lima and Santiago, and various city pairs connecting secondary markets that had previously been underserved.
A major strategic development occurred in 2023 when American Airlines announced an investment in JetSMART, acquiring a minority stake and forming a strategic partnership. This agreement included plans for codeshare cooperation and the integration of JetSMART into American Airlines’ broader network, providing passengers with enhanced connectivity between North America and South America.

The airline’s growth has been characterized by a consistent focus on cost discipline, fleet modernization, and market stimulation through low fares.
In 2026, the airline served more than 50 destinations and over 75 routes across South America, illustrating the scale of its expansion since the pandemic years.
By early 2026, JetSMART operated more than 50 aircraft with an average fleet age of just a few years. The airline continued to expand its Airbus A320neo and A321neo fleet while maintaining significant outstanding orders, including future deliveries of the long-range Airbus A321XLR, expected to enable new medium-haul routes later in the decade.

During the current decade the newest aircraft to join the fleet of JetSmart will be the A321XLR. Its history is defined by rapid expansion, strategic fleet acquisition and the establishment of multiple operating bases across the continent.

Reviews and comments ⭐
What Stands Out 😀👍 | Needs Improvement 🫤👎 |
✅ Unbeatable Base Fares: Passengers consistently praise the airline for providing the lowest price point in the South American market, making air travel accessible for budget-conscious travellers. | 👎 Technical Website Barriers: Numerous reviews highlight a buggy website and app that often fail during the payment or check-in process, forcing users to pay higher "at-the-counter" fees. |
✅ Modern Fleet: Travelers frequently mention the high quality and cleanliness of the aircraft, noting that the planes feel "brand new" compared to many regional competitors. | 👎 Rigid Baggage Inspections: A common complaint involves the extreme and sometimes "aggressive" enforcement of baggage dimensions, with passengers reporting unexpected charges for very minor size discrepancies. |
✅ Reliable Punctuality: Many reviews indicate that when there are no external disruptions, JetSmart is highly efficient and maintains an excellent on-time performance record in the region. | 👎 Customer Service Accessibility: Travelers express high frustration with the lack of human support, citing "endless loops" with automated WhatsApp bots and the inability to reach a representative during delays. |
✅ Expanding Route Network: Frequent flyers appreciate the airline’s "Smart Routes," which connect secondary cities directly without requiring a time-consuming layover in major hubs like Santiago or Lima. | 👎 Overselling & Boarding Issues: There are representative reports of flights being oversold, leading to "standby" situations at the gate for confirmed ticket holders and confusion regarding seat assignments. |
✅ Professional Cabin Crew: On-board staff are often described as young, energetic, and professional, providing a standard of service that exceeds typical "ultra-low-cost" expectations. | 👎 Refund & Compensation Delays: Passengers often report significant struggles when attempting to get refunds for cancelled flights, with many being forced to accept vouchers instead of cash. |
